DD Sports cricket 2026 — free-to-air India men's tours & ICC events guide

The one route to legal Indian cricket that costs nothing — DD Sports' FTA mandate covers selected India home internationals and ICC marquee events, with hard exclusions on the IPL and overseas tours.

DD Sports is the free-to-air cornerstone of legal cricket in India. Under the Sports Broadcasting Signals Act 2007, Prasar Bharati’s DD Sports channel is entitled to a free-to-air slice of “matches of national importance” — India men’s senior home tours, selected ICC events involving India and a handful of women’s marquee events. This page maps what DD Sports actually carries in 2026, what it doesn’t, and how to receive Doordarshan.

DD Free Dish is the cleanest no-subscription route: a one-time set-top box purchase, dish alignment to GSAT-30 or similar, and you have permanent FTA access to DD Sports plus the Doordarshan portfolio. Around 50 million Indian households use DD Free Dish.

Pan-region availability

DD Sports is India-only by satellite footprint and licence. No equivalent FTA exists for cricket in most other major markets.

How to watch legally on DD Sports

  1. Confirm your reception — terrestrial antenna if you’re in a DD transmitter footprint, DD Free Dish satellite otherwise. Cable subscribers usually have DD Sports in the basic FTA bouquet without opting in.
  2. Check the day-of programming — DD Sports’ FTA cricket carry is per-fixture, not blanket. Prasar Bharati publishes the live-match schedule a few days before each series.
  3. For everything DD Sports doesn’t carry, you need a paid route — JioHotstar Premium for digital, or a Star Sports sports add-on on DTH for linear.
  4. For the IPL specifically, there is no FTA route. The IPL is paywalled in India.

The FTA mandate — what counts and what doesn’t

The Sports Broadcasting Signals Act 2007 requires private rights-holders to share live feeds of “matches of national importance” with Prasar Bharati for FTA carry on DD Sports. The Supreme Court and subsequent Ministry of Information & Broadcasting clarifications have settled the scope:

  • Included: India men’s senior team home tours (Tests + ODIs + T20Is), selected ICC senior events involving India, India women’s senior matches at marquee events.
  • Excluded: Franchise leagues (IPL, BBL, PSL, CPL etc.), overseas India tours, domestic Indian first-class cricket below national selection level.

This is the legal scaffolding that lets DD Sports carry England’s tour of India on a free-to-air basis while leaving the IPL fully paywalled.

Frequently asked questions

Is DD Sports free to watch?
Yes — DD Sports is free-to-air, broadcast on Doordarshan’s terrestrial network and on DD Free Dish satellite. You need either a terrestrial antenna in range of a DD transmitter or a DD Free Dish set-top box (one-time hardware cost around ₹1,500–2,500, no monthly subscription). DD Sports is also carried on most cable and DTH packages as part of the basic FTA bouquet.
Does DD Sports carry the IPL?
No — DD Sports does not carry the IPL. The free-to-air mandate under the Sports Broadcasting Signals Act 2007 applies to ‘matches of national importance’ — India men’s senior home tours and selected ICC events — not to franchise leagues. Star Sports + JioHotstar hold exclusive IPL rights. The same exclusion applies to overseas Indian tours.
Which India home matches will DD Sports carry in 2026?
DD Sports is expected to carry selected matches from England’s tour of India (Jan–Feb 2026), the ICC T20 World Cup (Feb–Mar, India matches), the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and selected Asia Cup India matches. The FTA mandate operates per-fixture, so confirm match-by-match through Prasar Bharati’s announcement before each series. Overseas India tours and the IPL are excluded.
